Get involved Fund a project Zimbabwe appeal Zimbabwe Appeal Donate Fundraise In 2011 PROMPT began training labour ward staff at Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo, the main maternity unit for Zimbabwe’s second biggest city. Prior to this, similar to many of units in the country at the time, most of the staff had not received any training since commencing work there. PROMPT’s approach incorporated training for obstetric emergencies, developing emergency boxes, and introducing early-warning charts (MOEWS charts) to help identify deteriorating women. We also set up a computerised maternity dashboard so that the staff could track trends within their unit. Maternal mortality fell by 33% at Mpilo Hospital after PROMPT training. Staff from Mpilo Hospital have subsequently helped roll out PROMPT training to other units in Zimbabwe. In spite of the improvements, Mpilo Hospital – and other hospitals in the PROMPT network in Zimbabwe – need ongoing financial support to keep the training happening, and keep saving mothers’ lives in Zimbabwe.
