PROMPT Virtual Train the Trainers (T3)

All teams that attend PROMPT T3 training receive the PROMPT ‘Course in a Box’: a proven multi-professional training programme which was initially introduced to North Bristol NHS Trust with improvements replicated in real life, with a 50% reduction in neonatal hypoxic injuries, a 70% reduction in injuries after shoulder dystocia and improvements in Category 1 emergency Caesarean sections following the introduction of the programme.

From 2008 to date, the development of PROMPT (Practical Obstetric Multi-Professional Training) has led to the publication of the PROMPT ‘Course in a Box’, which in January 2017 saw the launch of the 3rd edition.  National recommendations for multi-professional obstetrics emergencies training for all maternity staff in the UK (National Maternity Review 2016) coupled with data demonstrating improved outcomes for mothers and babies has led to PROMPT being adopted by most units in the UK.

Internationally, interest has grown and PROMPT training has been adopted in a number of countries outside of the UK.  Many of these countries have conducted their own research trials and have demonstrated similar results to those achieved at Southmead Hospital.

PROMPT Critical Care Course Handbook
Available as part of the PROMPT T3 Programme

The aim of the PROMPT Care of the Critically Ill Pregnant or Postpartum Woman (CiPP) Course is to cover some components of the core curriculum for maternal critical care – this course is not intended to be exhaustive but to be used as a framework on which individual maternity units can build.

PROMPT CiPP has been designed as a separate ‘mini-course’ – structured, stand alone, multi-professional and face-to-face.

There is a dedicated course manual, lecture set and materials and guidance for small interactive learning stations.

The course is designed as a half-day course and should be led by an anaesthetist with a special interest in maternal critical care.

Lectures include:

• Care of the Critically Ill Pregnant or Postpartum Woman
• Sepsis in Pregnant Women
• Cardiorespiratory Emergencies
• Neurological Emergencies in Pregnancy

Skills stations include:

• Arterial blood gas analysis
• Oxygen therapy
• ECG interpretation
• Invasive monitoring
• Critical care charts
• Structured review of the critically ill woman

The PROMPT CiPP training package is available as part of the PROMPT ‘Course in a Box’.

Pre-hospital PROMPT

The Pre-hospital PROMPT training package provides hands-on simulation training for paramedic and ambulance staff who new required to provide emergency maternity care in the pre-hospital setting.  However the themes covered in the package could easily be adapted for use by other allied health care professionals providing pre-hospital care in Emergency Departments, community and midwife led birth centres.

Those trainers who have used the PROMPT ‘Course in a Box’ for their hospital maternity training will be familiar with the layout of this new training package.

The Trainer’s Guide provides guidance and materials for midwives, obstetricians and paramedic tutors wishing to implement Pre-hospital PROMPT courses in their maternity unit or region. It is supported by downloadable training materials, including Power Point presentations, demonstration videos and specific treatment algorithms for use on your local training days and in the clinical setting.

All information is based on UK national guidance and recommendation including the national UK Ambulance Services Clinical Practice Guidelines (JRCALC Guidelines 2016) and the UK Resuscitation Council Guidance (2015).

The PMF team are currently working in collaboration with the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust in providing Pre Hospital PROMPT training to their paramedics.

Undergraduate PROMPT

The Undergraduate PROMPT training package aims to improve inter-professional working between student midwives and student doctors and will contribute to mandatory undergraduate inter-professional training requirements as well as encouraging collaborative training by local maternity units and universities.

The package includes:

• Undergraduate PROMPT Trainer’s Manual
• Downloadable implementation tools
• Scenarios and videos to run local courses

The University West of England and University of Bristol are collaborating with the PROMPT Maternity Foundation with the implementation of Undergraduate PROMPT for their student midwives/medics.  The first Undergraduate PROMPT T3 took place on 5th September 2019.
