Emergencies in maternity can happen at any time of the day or night. Therefore it is essential that all staff are trained to the same level. So that, no matter when help is needed, appropriately staffed staff are there to respond.

By having everyone trained in the same way, it means that all staff know how they are expected to act if an emergency happens. They can also anticipate what other team members will do, and what the likely next steps are; thereby improving their situational awareness.
